Christophe Coppens opens his first exhibition on 9 March 2013 in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. His first work as a ‘full-time artist’ is commissioned by Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge.
Christophe Coppens (b. Belgium, 1969) worked as an accessories designer for 21 years, under his own label as well as for other designers. On 5 May 2012 he decided to close his business and discontinue all his activities in the realm of fashion. His most personal reason for doing this was the dilemma between fashion and art that he felt for many years. “You can’t be a good artist with the mentality of a fashion designer,” Coppens explains. “And I didn’t succeed at being a part-time artist.” His first work as a ‘full-time artist’ is EVERYTHING IS LOCAL, Landscape 1, a work commissioned by Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents this work to the public for the very first time.
Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge, an initiative from Han Nefkens and José Teunissen in collaboration with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, focuses on the edge of fashion and the visual arts. Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge was set up in 2006 and has since invested in the development of dresses and installations by Viktor & Rolf, Hussein Chalayan and many others. As part of the H+F Collection, these pieces have been given to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen on long-term loan.
