David Goldblatt (b. Randfontein, 1930) is the éminence grise of South African photography, known for his subtle and sharp take on life in South Africa. With the exhibition Intersections, Huis Marseille is the first to present a large survey of Goldblatt’s new colour photography in the Netherlands.

Inspired by the room in Huis Marseille displaying David Goldblatt’s most recent ‘AIDS Landscapes’, Han Nefkens has decided to acquire ten works which will be added to the long-term loan to Huis Marseille, with the aim of showing the photographs in a separate travelling exhibition dedicated to the theme of AIDS. This aim is in line with the programme to combat HIV-AIDS that Nefkens’ project ArtAids addresses and stimulates.

ArtAids

The ArtAids foundation was set up in 2006 at Han Nefkens’ initiative. ArtAids fights AIDS, with the substantial and monetary power of art as its most important weapon. ArtAids invites leading artists to produce work that is inspired by AIDS and related problems. These works of art are used not only to raise the public’s consciousness and to encourage their involvement but also to generate funds to support projects throughout the world aimed at preventing and fighting AIDS.
