The coming months, three of his works from Han Nefkens H+F Collection are exhibited in the so called ‘Tuinzaal’ of the museum. These works are on long term loan to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Chinese artist Zhou Tao (Changsha, 1976) has been named winner of the first Han Nefkens Foundation BACC Award for Contemporary Art. This newly created award aims to promote young artists who live and work in the Asia region. The inaugural winner is Zhou Tao, who lives in Guangzhou, a commercial city in southern China. The biennial award is an initiative of Dutch collector and writer Han Nefkens and of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC).

The award targets artists under 40 who have built up a solid body of work but have not yet managed to consolidate an international career.

This was the case with Zhou Tao, who was unanimously chosen for his profound commitment to his environment, with the jury valuing Zhou Tao´s “intelligent use of the most appropriate medium in each case to analyse and compare different spheres such as public/private or rural/urban and even art history in general”.

The award is worth 15,000 USD: 3,000 in artist´s fees and 12,000 towards creating a new project at the BACC or for the Bangkok metropolitan area. The jury believes that Zhou Tao´s residency in Bangkok will benefit both the city and the artist, particularly given his great curiosity for his immediate surroundings. It will also allow him to further develop his works, because, in the jury´s opinion, “his works show great maturity but he is in the process of searching for his own original voice.”

The choice was unanimous. The jury of the first Han Nefkens Foundation BACC Award was chaired by art collector Han Nefkens and its members were Hilde Teerlinck, Director of the Han Nefkens Foundation and FRAC Nord-Pas-de-Calais; Luckana Kunavichayanont, Director of the BACC; Yuko Hasegawa, Head Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Tokyo and Feng Boyi, a Chinese freelance curator and art critic.

Iman Issa (Cairo, 1979) has been unanimously named winner of the first Han Nefkens Foundation-MACBA Award for Contemporary Art. The award was set up in 2011 as an initiative of Barcelona-based Dutch arts patron and writer Han Nefkens, and the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona. The aim of this new award is to help strengthen the careers of artists who have a solid body of work behind them but still require institutional support to gain full recognition from the international community.

In its deliberations, the jury stated that “this award will have an extremely positive effect at a crucial point in Iman Issa’s career, given that it poses a challenge in terms of rigour and creativity.” Furthermore, the jury believes that Issa has a visual and critical maturity that is rare in artists of her generation, that her artistic and intellectual trajectory testifies to a constantly evolving artistic practice and critical vision, a fertile imagination, and the capacity to involve, question and challenge the viewer.

Given that the Award aims to set up networks and promote mutual understanding among the five continents, a group of ten scouts based around the world were asked to submit a list of finalists to the jury. This group was made up of Defne Ayas (The Netherlands), Zdenka Badovinac (Slovenia), Abdellah Karroum (Morocco), Sylvia Kouvali (Turkey), Gabi Ngcobo (South Africa), Victoria Noorthoorn (Argentina), Manu Park (South Korea), Beatriz Pérez (Colombia), Christoph Storz (India) and Barthélémy Togo (Cameroon and Paris).

The members of the jury of the first Han Nefkens Foundation-MACBA Award are: art collector Han Nefkens (Barcelona) as founder; Iwona Blazwick (London), Director, Whitechapel Art Gallery; Adriano Pedrosa (São Paulo), independent curator, writer and art critic; Christine Tohmé (Beirut), curator and cultural activist, and Bartomeu Marí (Barcelona), Director, MACBA

The video The Last Word by Shirin Neshat from Han Nefkens H+F Collection will be shown in the exhibition ‘Une fenêtre suffit…’ (A window will suffice…) from January 15 to February 22, 2013 at the Espace Culture from the Université Lille 1.

As part of the cycle ‘Mediterranean’ organized by the Espace Culture from October 2012 through April 2013, FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais is featuring two Middle Eastern video artists in this exhibition. Besides Shirin Neshat also Raedah Sa’adeh and her video Vacuum from the collection of 49 Nord 6 Est FRAC Lorraine.

A window is a source of light, of images, of communication, but what it reveals is not always visible, or it is visible only in part. The window thus plays a double role: it exhibits and dissimulates, it acts as a springboard both for our imagination and for our demands.

The two videos by Shirin Neshat and Raedah Sa’adeh are like two windows open onto women’s condition in the Middle East. The two artists invite us to adopt their gaze…to listen to their voices. Each tells us in her own way—one through metaphor, the other through narrative—her stories, her experiences, her feelings, and her insights.

The first artist, Shirin Neshat, is Iranian and works in the United States. In her 2003 video, The Last Word, a woman is subjected to an interrogation in the basement of a building, and recites the lines of the poem Window by Forough Farrokhzâd.

The second artist, Raedah Sa’adeh, is Palestinian and works in Israel. In Vacuum, she evokes both submission and rebellion. She acts out a scene in which she is vacuuming the desert. This Sisyphean gesture challenges the notions of identity and gender, denouncing in particular the status of Palestinian women.

At the recent Brasilia Film Festival (www.festbrasilia.com.br), this category was won by Gabriel Mascaro’s film Ebb & Flow, which was produced with a grant from Han Nefkens ArtAids Foundation. Ebb & Flow is an experimental project that includes hybrid techniques that straddle documentary and fiction. The protagonist is Rodrigo (Márcio Campelo), a young man who, in spite of his deafness, earns a living installing car radios at a small dealership located on the outskirts of Recife, in north-western Brazil. In the words of the artist: “The aesthetic choices of filming with a fixed camera and extending the shots are intended to transmit the sensory experiences of Rodrigo, who was chosen as the main character in order to weave a web of sonic vibrations, noises, silences, hesitations and ambiguities.” Mascaro deals with the issue of AIDS and the stigma associated with the illness by exploring a situation of ‘normality’, that is, the everyday life of a young HIV-positive man.

IDFA

Ebb & Flow has also been selected to participate in the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA, www.idfa.nl). From 14 till 25 November 2012. Ebb & Flow will be part of the Reflecting Images – Panorama section, which brings together a series of films that are thought-provoking in form and choice of theme. The IDFA screening will be the international premiere of this film.
