His first work as a ‘full-time artist’ is commissioned by Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge.

Christophe Coppens (b. Belgium, 1969) worked as an accessories designer for 21 years, under his own label as well as for other designers. On 5 May 2012 he decided to close his business and discontinue all his activities in the realm of fashion. His most personal reason for doing this was the dilemma between fashion and art that he felt for many years. “You can’t be a good artist with the mentality of a fashion designer,” Coppens explains. “And I didn’t succeed at being a part-time artist.” His first work as a ‘full-time artist’ is EVERYTHING IS LOCAL, Landscape 1, a work commissioned by Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents this work to the public for the very first time.

Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge, an initiative from Han Nefkens and José Teunissen in collaboration with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, focuses on the edge of fashion and the visual arts. Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge was set up in 2006 and has since invested in the development of dresses and installations by Viktor & Rolf, Hussein Chalayan and many others. As part of the H+F Collection, these pieces have been given to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen on long-term loan.

This autumn Rejina Pyo, winner of the Han Nefkens Fashion Award 2012, will present her work in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. From 29 September Pyo’s collection ‘Structural Mode’ will be on view in the Willem van der Vorm gallery and in the Richard Serra Room.

Rejina Pyo

Rejina Pyo is a Korean born fashion designer based in London. Immediately after graduating from her MA Fashion at Central Saint Martins she was taken on by Roksanda Ilincic to work at her eponymous label as first assistant designer. She also collaborated with the H&M owned ‘Weekday’, creating a range of designs based on her MA collection that are sold across Europe in their chain of stores.

London Fashion Week

Inspired by modern art and architecture, Rejina Pyo created a stand out collection for her Central Saint Martins MA show at London Fashion Week. Her use of wooden sculptures together with fluid dresses created a beautifully idiosyncratic mood that captured the attention of the fashion press. It also captured the attention of Vassilis Zidianakis from ATOPOS CVC who curated the ‘ARRRGH! Monsters in Fashion’ exhibition, hosted at the Benaki Museum in Athens, where Pyo’s collection was presented as part of this exhibition.

Structural Mode

Rejina Pyo’s newly commissioned work for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen focuses on her long time study of fashion and art and is entitled ‘Structural Mode’. It is another statement collection working on the boundary between wearable garments and art works, fusing together elements of fashion and sculpture. Curator of the exhibition is José Teunissen.

Design in Boijmans

This exhibition is part of the ‘Design in Boijmans’ programme. This summer design has been spotlighted in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. With the renewed arrangement of the museum collection and several design exhibitions, in 2012 a lot of attention is paid to design in the museum.

Alongside an exhibition that presents a large number of works from the collection of FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, Out of Storage consists of a program of events entitled Provisoire & Définitif – a reference to a work by Maurizio Nannucci that is presented in the exhibition. This program consists of educational projects, research, publications, workshops, debates, lectures and performances, which reflect on several models for a museum. The project also includes various partnerships, amongst others with Maastricht University and H+F Collection. From the H+F Collection works of Gerald Van der Kaap, Masato Nakamura, Elina Brotherus and Adel Abdessemed are exhibited.

Taking Place reintroduces the Stedelijk Museum by addressing its history, the spatial and temporal conditions of the unfinished building and the ways in which artists use, occupy and animate museum spaces. The historical, functional and architectural conditions of the museum are both subject and material for this special presentation of works by local, national and international contemporary artists, who range from well-known and established figures to emerging artists. Renovated gallery spaces on the ground and upper floors of the building ultimately designated for the presentation works from of the museum’s collection of 19th- to 21st-century painting, sculpture, photography, works on paper and applied industrial- and graphic design will for this occasion be used in an innovative and experimental way that takes advantage of their current state.

White is the Colour (2002), a work by Diana Thater from the H+F Collection (in long-term loan to Centraal Museum, Utrecht), is part of this exhibition.
